In Mould Decoration (IMD) - Phone lenses
applicationThere is a trend towards In Mould Decoration for phone lenses. Traditionally lenses were molded from impact modified PMMA resin in the belief that the excellent pencil hardness of this material would protect the lens from damage in use. In practice the surface hardness and scuff resistance of these PMMA lenses is poor. The only way to enhance this is to use a coating. Dip coating has been used, but raises problems of cosmetic quality and because it creates a component coated on both sides can also create difficulties when bonding the part onto the A frame.

Using In Mould Decoration allows the lens to be coated selectively on the front surface, leaving the back free to accept the adhesives necessary to bond onto the A frame. The coating quality possible on a state of art coating line is far better than any spray or dip process which may be operated on the finished part, and the hardness achievable is excellent.

Hardcoated PC film such as AutoFlex AF is suitable for many lens applications, but where the specification requires enhanced pencil hardness this is often best achieved using a PET based hardcoat such as Autoflex EBG. This material is limited to shallow form lenses.
